The kitchen and the cinema are considered artistic expressions based on pleasure, sensations and the transmission of a message. They have similar roots and their combination derives from gastronomic cinema, a theme that always leaves a good taste in the mouth of the viewer.

Don’t you think they are similar? We explain our conclusion: They are two very similar arts, since they enter through the eyes, the first impression of the film is as important as that of a plate, it should not leave the viewer or diner indifferent, sensitivity is fundamental, it must tell something memorable … Do you see how we are right?

We have made you a selection of some films included in gastronomic cinema. They deal with humor, love, self-improvement, friendship and a passion for cooking. Everything you can find in our restaurant! Take advantage 🙂

Julie y Julia

We already made reference to this film in the post about important women in gastronomy. It is based on real events, specifically the life of Julia Child, an American cook with great media success who published, among others, the book Mastering the Art of French Cooking and whom Julie, the protagonist, admires and emulates.

American Cuisine

Loren Collins works as a cook for the United States Navy, but his culinary style does not meet the standards required of him, so he is expelled. He decides to leave for France (gastronomic cinema is often located there) in search of work with Louis Boyer, the greatest culinary genius in the country, but his poor training will make things difficult for him.

 Fried Green Tomatoes

We deviate a bit from the kitchen of a classic restaurant to tell you about this moving film, where we see how cooking can be the perfect common thread of a friendship. Women’s liberation and the fight against racism are led by the main characters, Idgie and Ruth, who decide to set up a Café where they serve their food close and committed.

Chocolat

The gastronomic cinema also makes room for pastries and the sweetest aspect of the kitchen. The story takes place in a traditional French town back in 1959. Vianne, a stranger, decides to open a chocolate shop next to the church, something not very well seen by some villagers, who always reject innovation in their lives. Little by little it is observed how the pleasure of tasting a good chocolate frees the minds, relieves sorrows and helps make dreams come true. The power of the kitchen!

Ratatouille

Movie for the whole family. And we say it because, obviously, it is for children, but adults who love gastronomy will also enjoy it. Remy is a Parisian who appreciates good food and has a fairly sophisticated palate. You want to become a chef to create and enjoy various culinary works of art. The only problem is that Remy is a rat. And when it ends up in the sewers below one of the most exclusive restaurants in Paris, the rodent feels like the perfect place to make its dream come true. What is inspiring?

Comme un chef

French Hispanic comedy starring Jean Reno and Michaël Young. The first is a prestigious, narcissistic and authoritarian cook whose inspiration in the kitchen has completely disappeared. The second is a self-taught chef who is always expelled from his jobs because they do not understand his cooking. You both need each other, what will happen?

Burnt

Gastronomic cinema sometimes shows us the inside of the great chefs, with all the positive and also the negative. In this film, Adam Jones (played by Bradley Cooper) is a genius behind the stove but his problematic character leads him to lose everything. Little by little it has to rise from its ashes and triumph again. In addition to the value of overcoming, this film is about how the soul has to put itself in each elaboration and in each step that is taken in the world of restoration.

No reservations

Ignoring the romantic plot that is the common thread of the film, we like to recommend it because it reflects the daily sacrifice required to maintain high quality standards in a prestigious kitchen. Kate, the protagonist, lives and breathes gastronomy, and her way of working is very inspiring. A good example of gastronomic cinema!

Chef

Carl Casper is a chef who works in the kitchen of a well-known restaurant in Los Angeles. But sometimes all that glitters is not gold. He has lost his personality as a chef, his creativity is overrun and his passion has disappeared. He decides to abandon his comfortable life and find a way to wake up everything that made him love cooking. Will it succeed?

The Hundred-Foot Journey

We have saved this gem for last because it is the perfect example of Venetiis Restaurant’s fusion cuisine concept. It is not about simply joining ingredients, you have to know a culture and its products, you have to want to tell something. In this film we see a combination of French and Indian cuisine, the most absolute tradition and the new and daring flavors. It is to be eaten!
